Latest data shows Oldham's Covid-19 cases rising

The latest data has shown a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in Oldham.

Over the last 7 days (5 –11 December) Oldham has had 892 new cases identified, which is higher than the previous week’s total of 793.

This means the borough has a a 7-day rate of 375 (per 100,000) which remains the 2nd lowest rate across Greater Manchester and lower than the England rate of 533.

It is the fourth consecutive weekly rise in cases.

The lasted 28-day data shows that high-school-aged children have the highest number of cases with 678 new cases.

There were four new Covid-related deaths registered in Oldham on the week ending 3 December.

Almost half of Oldham's eligible population have now received their third (booster) jab, though there are major differences in the take-up between ethnicities.  The highest rate can be found in the White/White British population at 59%, compared to just 16% of the Asian/Asian British population.

It's understood that one in five Covid cases in the North West are now the new Omicron variant.

Head of the UK Health Security Agency Dr Jenny Harries, the strain is "probably the most significant threat we've had since the start of the pandemic.

"And I'm sure the numbers, we'll see on data over the next few days, will be really quite staggering compared to the rate of growth we've seen in cases for previous variants.

"We're starting to see it and feel it now - in London particularly, but yesterday particularly around Manchester."
