'Don't Trash Oldham': 187 people fined

Date published: 16 December 2021

187 people have been fined during Oldham Council's 'Don't Trash Oldham' campaign to reduce fly-tipping in the borough.

The council say an extra 55 tons of litter and waste have been removed from Oldham's streets, roads and alleys during the first three months of the campaign.

Oldham Council teams have cleaned up 417 streets and over 150 alleys, including deep cleans in Alexandra, Chadderton Central, Chadderton North, Shaw and Crompton.

Medlock Vale ward is the current focus, before staff move to St James’ and Waterhead in January.

Since the clean ups began in September, 187 fines have been handed out to those who have flouted the regulations.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “The first three months of our campaign have flown by and it’s showing results.

“In that time our staff, along with volunteers, have done a brilliant job cleaning up the borough.

“We know there is still a lot of work to be done – cleaning up the borough is a priority for the council, but everyone can do their bit help as well.”

“Don’t let people bring down your communities by dumping rubbish. Report them to us and we’ll take action.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “I’ve been out with the clean up staff and knocking on doors with our engagement teams and what’s come across is that our work is making a difference. People are telling us that.

“Sadly, we know people will dump waste in places we’ve cleared, so we are being realistic as we know the issue isn’t going away. But we also aren’t prepared to sit back and do nothing as no one wants to live in a tip.

“Work with us, and let’s improve Oldham.”

Lots of residents have also got involved and supported the borough-wide initiative by carrying out their own litter picks.
