New Money Advice Tool launched in Oldham

The online tool describes places that people can go for financial advice

A new tool to help people to find extra money they are entitled to has launched in Oldham.

Greater Manchester Poverty Action (GMPA) has been working over the last year with Oldham Council and partners across the borough, to co-produce the service.

The online tool describes all the places that people can go for financial advice and other income maximisation support. The aim is to help people get all the money that they are entitled to, and to reduce the need for referrals to food banks, by increasing referrals to other kinds of support.

The tool is designed to be user-friendly, by first asking “What’s the problem?” to establish the issues underlying a person’s need for support. The tool then outlines some options to address these issues and then provides contact details for organisations who can help.

Councillor Zahid Chauhan, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Oldham Council, said: “I’m glad to see this support tool available to people at a time when many are needing it the most. The rising costs of living is hitting many people in Oldham hard and is a real crisis. This “cash-first” approach will help get money in hands to those who are truly struggling.

“If you’re finding things tough right now just know that you’re not alone and help is available. I encourage you to use this tool to make sure you’re accessing support you might be entitled to.”

It has never been more important to ensure that people can access the support they need. The money advice tool will help make that happen, ensuring people can access financial support and maximise their incomes.”

This GMPA programme has been funded by Oldham Council and the Trussell Trust. The Money Advice Tool grew out of the GM Food Poverty Action Plan.
