Oldham mosque launches £100,000 appeal after storm damage

Date published: 24 February 2022

An Oldham Mosque which was damaged in Storm Eunice last week may need over £100,000 for repairs to the building.

Greengate Jamia Masjid was severely damaged as storms battered Oldham on Saturday.

High winds caused one of the minarets to topple from the building and through the roof of the prayer hall.

The dome was damaged

The second minaret is also unstable, and requires urgent repair.

The dome and roof of the mosque were also significantly damaged by the storm.

Attempts were made to secure the remaining minaret and attend to the roof, but workers were unable to continue due to the continuing bad weather.

The Mosque is now asking for donations towards the repair of the building.

Posting on social media, bosses updated the community.

"As many of you will have seen, there has been significant storm damage at the Masjid.

"One of the Minarets has fallen through the roof of the prayer hall, the second minaret is unstable and the dome has also been damaged, the costs for replacements and repairs are likely to be over £100k.

"We are meeting with experts over the next few days to try and plan the repairs and estimate costs. Many people have already pledged to contribute towards the cost of repairs, and we are putting out an urgent appeal for donations.

"Every donation will make a considerable difference.  May Allah (swt) reward you immensely."

The team also thanked Greater Manchester Police, Oldham Council, and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for attending over the weekend, to cordon off the area and prevent further damage or injury.
