Can your kitchen table help support Maggie's Oldham this month?

Date published: 03 March 2022

You could help support Maggie's Cancer Centre in Oldham later this month on 'Kitchen Table Day'.

On Friday 25th March, hundreds of people across the UK will be taking part in the event for Maggie’s cancer centres.

The award-winning centre, based at the Royal Oldham Hospital, offers free practical and psychological support to anyone affected by cancer, and their loved ones. And they need your help to continue to be there for people with cancer when they need it most.

Supporters can host any event, as long as it is centred around a kitchen table, which are at the heart of every Maggie’s centre. Sign-ups this year include a pizza and prosecco party, a cake sale at work, and even a cheese and beer evening. Events can be held on Friday 25th March or a date that works for you.

Maggie’s Oldham supporter Antonia Diggle is holding her first Kitchen Table Day this year and says she's pleased to help: "Really looking forward to holding my event for Maggie’s Oldham, a great excuse for us to invite friends and family over. We’re going to be making fresh pizzas to order, from ‘Diggleo’s’ Pizzeria!"

"Everyone will be bringing their own cakes to sell and we will have plenty of games and challenges along the way. We might even throw in some orange fancy dress. What will you do?”

Every Maggie’s follows the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. Maggie lived with advanced cancer for two years and was determined that she should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”.

In order to live more positively with cancer, Maggie believed people needed information, stress-reducing strategies, psychological support and the opportunity to meet other people in similar circumstances in a relaxed and beautiful setting. All Maggie’s are individually designed by leading architects to feel like a home and all have a big kitchen table at their heart.

Built in the grounds of the Royal Oldham Hospital, Maggie’s Oldham is a warm and welcoming place, with qualified professionals on hand to offer an evidence-based core programme of support that has been shown to improve physical and emotional wellbeing.

Maggie’s Oldham relies on voluntary donations to develop its unique, high-quality programme of support. The charity’s aim is to make the biggest difference possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.
