Four people have been rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out at a Turkish restaurant in Oldham town centre.

Yorkshire Street was closed as seven fire engines tackled the blaze at Istanbul Resturant.

Crews remained at the scene until around midday after the fire broke out in the kitchen at around 8am on Saturday morning.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service said: "Just before 8am this morning firefighters were called to reports of a fire in the kitchen of a restaurant on Yorkshire Street, Oldham.

"Seven fire engines, including specialist support units, attended the scene and crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to quickly extinguish the fire.

"Fire crews helped to remove four occupants from the building, who were then conveyed to the care of our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service, before working to clear and make the area safe. GMFRS were at the scene for around four hours."
