Walker saved by Mountain Rescue

Oldham's heroes of the hills were scrambled  after a request from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust for assistance with the location and treatment of a female walker who had made a 999 call asking for help.

Due  to a patchy phone signal, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team's only details were she was near Greenfield Brook. At that point, the team had no proper location, information  or injury details.

However their fast party heading towards Birchen Clough came across the female on the track above Greenfield Reservoir on Wednesday.

After falling from the path at Birchen waterfall, the casualty had managed, with the help of her partner and passers-by, to self-rescue to that point.

Initial assessment by OMRT indicated she had suffered multiple injuries, including lower leg deformity. Fortunately, the NWAS ambulance and Rapid Response Vehicle were on scene soon after and were able to get her directly into the ambulance for a more thorough assessment and onward transport to hospital.

The ten-strong mountain rescue team, involved for just under two hours, have since heard  the casualty was released from hospital with a possible fractured ankle and ribs, plus heavy bruises.

“All at OMRT send our best wishes for a speedy recovery,” said the team’s spokesperson.
