Firefighters rescue pair following Ashton incident

Seven fire engines and several specialist and support appliances from across Tameside and Stockport attended a fire involving the external ducting and roof space of a mid-terraced commercial property on Smallshaw Lane in Ashton on Saturday morning.

Firefighters quickly responded to the incident and rescued two people from a neighbouring property.

Crews used six breathing apparatus, two jets, one ultra-high pressure lance and an aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire.

Two casualties were checked at the scene as a precaution by North West Ambulance Service.

Group Manager James Willmott said: "I want to praise the quick work of our firefighters in bringing this incident under control.

"Their quick response and hard work today meant that we were able protect lives and stop the fire spreading as well as limiting damage to neighbouring properties.   

"This incident is a reminder to all residents and businesses in Greater Manchester to make sure that you have working smoke alarms in your property and that you have an escape plan in the event of a fire.

"Being prepared could save your life one day.

Firefighters remained on scene for a number of hours as they extinguished remaining hot spots.
