A man who was stabbed in Oldham town centre at the weekend has been named.

48-year-old Paulo De Silva suffered serious injuries after an incident on Union Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital a short time later.

Mr De Silva had been stabbed several times, including fatally in the chest.

Detectives from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team have now charged a man with murder.

Rudi Cardoso (31), of Alma Street, Rochdale, was arrested in the Ipswich area of Suffolk in the early hours of Sunday 29 May before being brought to a Greater Manchester custody site – where he has since remained for questioning.

Last night he was been charged with one count of murder and has been remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today.

Following the stabbing in the town centre, and an unrelated knife incident in Glodwick, police used emergency powers allowing officers to stop-search anyone in a defined area from Sunday afternoon until 7am Monday morning.
