Oldhamers Charlene Burns and Kim Rogers - who set up ‘Real Education Empowering Lives (REEL CIC)’ to offer a range of services for people in need across the borough - have spoken of their pride after being awarded a British Empire Medal.

After attending a Queen's Garden Party for an investitute ceremony, Charlene and Kim said: "We can not thank all our wonderful team and volunteers enough for all the hard work they have done and continue to do at REEL CIC.

"We celebrated with local partners the Salvation Army in Fitton Hill by hosting a lovely thank you afternoon tea party.

"Cllr Nasheen and Cllr Shaid joined us and presented certificates of thanks to all our wonderful volunteers.

"REEL CIC work with many local organisations and partners, and we would like to give our sincere thanks to all who have supported us on the journey.

"Thanks to our funders and a special thanks to our team and volunteers - the BEM medal is for us all."

Charlene added: "I am extremely honoured to receive a BEM and to have been one of the 70 torch bearers in the Platinum Queens Jubilee event for my services to the community.

"I have never felt more proud to be an Oldhamer and it's quite overwhelming to have achieved this.

"I never could have imagined such incredible moments.

"I held my torch proudly as a member of the LGBTQ community as we are also celebrating Pride Month."

"I am very humbled to have been nominated for both the BEM and to be one of the 70 torch bearers in our town.

"It's been a great month of celebrations and I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us at Team REEL."

REEL CIC's activities includes women's enrichment work, family support groups, father's group, parents and toddler groups, wellbeing and fitness activities, positive activities for children and young people, and bespoke support to meet individuals needs.
