“The greatest free show on earth” really lived up to its exalted title with the colourful return of Saddleworth and Oldham Whit Friday band contests for the first time in three years.
And the hills embracing Saddleworth’s villages ignited to the sound of music with local and international brass bands competing for a share of a £40,000 prize pot.
The bands offered a tidal wave of musical treats as they surged through Uppermill, Delph, Denshaw, Diggle, Dobcross, Friezland, Greenfield, Grotton, Lees and Springhead, Lydgate, Scouthead and Austerlands playing a choice of test pieces.
Robert Rodgers who is co-ordinator of the administration of the central área prize for Saddleworth and Oldham Whit Friday band contest and has been involved in the event since 1968.
Summarising after the event he said: ”Everything went well, although fewer bands, log jams in places with long waits whilst other bands sailed through easily.
“Everyone enjoyed the evening and the weather really made the day. In Delph for example, we had 73 bands and had to close the contest early so the road could be re-opened at midnight in accorance with out Event Plan.
“Rothwell Temperance Band played the National Anthem at one minute to midnight,” he added.
“We had an excellent team of helpers, some new volunteers, and all involved did an excellent job which bodes well for the future. But, most importantly, everyone enjoyed being part of the team.”
