Councillors say demolition work on former Shaw church “complying with planning consent” following social media criticism

Local Shaw and Crompton councillors are seeking to reassure residents about the demolition work currently taking place at the former St Paul’s Methodist Church on Rochdale Road.

Demolition consent was granted in 2019 following the partial collapse of the roof of the building.  Roads were closed for a time whilst the building was assessed.

Works began earlier this month on the demolition of the site, but rumours circulated online that the required standards were not being met.

Now, Chris Gloster, Liberal Democrat councillor for Shaw, says he is reassured that the demolition is lawful and within guidelines.

“As part of ensuring that these works are carried out in line with the planning consent, we have asked Oldham Council's Planning Enforcement to monitor the works and ensure that they are taking place lawfully and appropriately,” he told the Chronicle.

Council enforcement officers visited the site last week and sought assurances from the owners that they were complying with the requirements of the planning consent and are monitoring the site clearance, along with maintaining a visual record of works taking place.

“These are the facts of the matter as we know them,” added councillor Gloster.  “Lots of other things are being suggested which are just not true as some people try to make mischief in the community.”
