A man has been jailed after trying to sell a stolen laptop to plain clothed police officers.

The man was arrested on Friday (July 15) after approaching plain clothed officers and trying to sell them a laptop which had been stolen from a vehicle in Manchester city centre.

He was subsequently charged and remanded until a hearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday), during which he was jailed.

The offender was also made subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order which excludes him from key areas and certain behaviours for two years.

Superintendent Ian Jones, of GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: “This is just one example of the proactive work our Serious Acquisitive Crime Team are doing to fight, prevent and reduce crime in the city centre.

“We are currently running a number of operations - some with uniformed officers and others with plain clothed officers, so the public can have confidence that we are committed to keeping them and their belongings safe

“In addition to this individual, the team arrested a second offender for theft from a motor vehicle on Friday.

"He also appeared in court yesterday where he pleaded guilty and is now awaiting sentencing – in August."

As part of the Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing recruitment, additional officers are being deployed into both uniformed and plain clothed roles.
