Bush bashing battle set for February

Countryside lovers are invited to join an all action day to defeat invasive species of Rhododendron at a valuable moorland.

The National Trust are hosting the first  ‘community day’ of the year which will see local volunteers targeting Rhododendron which quickly spreads across valley sides at Marsden Moor with its thick foliage stopping the growth native plants.

Soil around rhododendron becomes exposed, increasing the speed of water run-off, which affects water quality in the reservoirs. Keeping water on the moor also helps reduce fire and flood risk.

The rhododendron bashing community day is Sunday, February 12th from 10am. National Trust Rangers will meet attendees by the cattle grid near to Blakely Reservoir (what3words: relished.iceberg.soil).

Please note vehicles are not allowed to this point. People will need to park on Binn Lane (what3words: mute.forehand.loss) and walk to the meeting place.

Rangers can take a limited number of people from the National Trust Estate Office and Exhibition Room,  Old Goods Yard, Station Road, Marsden, HD7 6DH.

National Trust Ranger Francesca Bray, pictured, said: “We couldn’t do what we do without the help of local people. These community days are always good opportunities to involve lots of people, from young children to adults, in our work on Marsden Moor and show how much we appreciate their support.

“It’s exciting to get our first date in the diary for 2023 and we’re looking forward to welcoming new faces alongside other people who have taken part in our activities throughout the years, such as planting sphagnum moss.

“We always make sure to have a bit of fun in these sessions as well as explaining how they fit into our wider conservation plans.

“Anyone can have a go at rhododendron bashing, but please be aware there is a short walk to the work site and the terrain is uneven.

“Bring sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. Waterproof clothing is recommended as conditions can change quickly.

“There are no facilities once we get on the moor. We’d advise bringing lots of water and lunch. We definitely recommend bringing something warm to drink!

“We will provide tools and gloves, and our rangers will be on hand to offer help and answer any questions.”

People are free to arrive on the day, but helpers can confirm their attendance or if they need to notify rangers of any medical/access information – or simply have any other questions – contact the Marsden Moor office on 01484 847016 or by email on marsdenmoor@nationaltrust.org.uk.
