Oldham-born 'Kinder Trespasser's' speedway bike to go on display

Date published: 17 April 2023

Oldham-born Clem Beckett was one of the top speedway riders of his day, riding for Belle Vue Aces and Sheffield Tigers back in the 1930s.

Clem took part in the famous 1932 Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, when five ramblers were jailed.

That was before, in 1937, Clem volunteered to go and fight in the Spanish Civil War where he was killed.

Clem's nephew, Andy Widdall, owns Clem's magnificent Rudge Whitworth bike, and that will now be going on display at this year's 'Spirit of Kinder' event at Hayfield, Derbyshire, this Saturday (April 22).

The 91st anniversary celebration on Hayfield village green will be a day of music, stalls, exhibitions and talks, and will get under way at 1pm.
