The Rotary Club of Oldham once again staged their Students Awards ceremony in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre last month, in the presence of then Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Elaine Garry, and her Consort, Cllr Graham Shuttleworth.

The Oldham Student of the Year for 2023 in the 16+ category was Scarlet Flood, from the Oldham Hulme Grammar School.

The Oldham Student of the Year in the 11 to 16 years category was Louie Wild from the Saddleworth School.

Runner up in the 16+ category was Catherine Burke, from Oldham Hulme Grammar School, while the runner-up in the 11-16 years age group was Benjamin Greenwood, from Crompton House School.

The Rotary Club made a Special Award to Awesta Yaftaly, of the Blue Coat School.

The President of the Rotary Club, Neil Taylor, gave a synopsis of Rotary locally and internationally and thanked the nominees, their schools, parents and guardians for taking part in this year’s awards.

President Neil said he was proud to be involved in the awards and was amazed at the continued high standards of nominations and the wide variety of service being shown by students.

The nominations reflected the ability and determination of young people to overcome the challenges presented to them and set examples of fortitude and leadership.

The nominations received reflected the way young people have responded to the needs of communities, the needs of families and also the needs of fellow students.

The organizing committee and the judging panel of Rotarians were faced with an extremely challenging number of nominations from schools, academies and colleges from across the borough, and had difficult decisions to make.

The Mayor said that she was delighted to be able to be present at the awards.

She said she was proud to be associated with the awards and reminded all present that the award seeks to recognise the outstanding contribution young people give to their school, to our local community and to family.

She thanked and congratulated each nominee for their dedication and commitment, which she saw as a very encouraging sign for the town.

This year the Rotary Club of Oldham has fully sponsored the awards, including all the prizes, and President Neil said that he was very grateful for the support of all the members.

The Club President and the Mayor presented all the nominated students with a nominee certificate and then the winners and runners-up were announced.

The Rotary Club would like to thank the staff of all participating Schools, Academies and Colleges for their support and hope that in the Academic Year 2023-2024, they will be able to continue with the awards and encourage and acknowledge the tremendous service young people give to Oldham as a whole.
