'The Brigadier's Return' tells the story of the Oldham men who fought in the Spanish Civil War

A total of 304 men returned to the UK from fighting for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War, including several from Oldham and Rochdale

On December 7, 1938, a total of 304 men returned to the UK from fighting for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War, including several from Oldham and Rochdale.

Even though their return had only been announced the day before, they were greeted in London by huge crowds of people, including Clement Attlee, the Labour Leader.

These men made history by forming part of the greatest international democratic army the world has ever known.

A couple of days later the Lancashire comrades left London for their home towns, including Oldham.

The International Brigade Memorial Trust is now marking this 85th anniversary with a free one-hour film show - The Brigaders Return - on Tuesday, December 5 at 3pm at Oldham Parish Church in Oldham town centre.
