A top community conservationist is quietly helping save toads across Saddleworth.
For 28 years, stalwart Greg Barratt has carried out his labour of love, but he says numbers over the years have decreased significantly.
“I used to cross 2,000 in a two-week period from March 15 between the hours of 7pm and 9pm," said Greg.
“But over the years, the numbers have dropped, and as they are an indicator species its been quite a worry.
"In mid-February, I found six in the mild spell of weather, then nothing.
“Well, one night recently was a totally different story.
"I moved 102 so far off the road to their pond edge.
"Some years, I have only had numbers in the 30s.”
And he added: ”I just hope this continues as it's a sign for hope for our amphibian friends.
"I will endeavour to continue this patrol for the next two weeks and see if we are getting back to where we were in the mid-90s.”
