Uppermill film maker and writer launches new online writing course

Date published: 24 March 2024

On April 5, 2024, local writer and film maker John L Matthews, founder of Uppermill-based production company Bigger Picture Studios, launches a brand-new online writing course.

Entitled ‘Letting It Rip!’, the five-day course is a ‘Trust-Your-Feelings, renegade writing workshop’.

Said John: "If you like breaking rules and being creative, if you think you have a story burning inside of you but don’t know how to get it out - this course could well be for you.

"We know how to get stories started and our years of knowledge and experience can help you."

John started his working life as a butcher working for his dad, but has won many awards and earned a living from his creativity, writing and film making skills for over 20 years.

He has written and produced five books and 10 films to date, sold all over the world.

John added: "People often ask ‘am I in the right job to be a writer?’

"What people don’t realise is real life experience is extremely valuable to writers... Franz Kafka worked in insurance, Anthony Trollope toiled at the Post Office, Agathie Christie was a pharmacist’s assistant and Kurt Vonnegut sold cars!

"And me, I was a butcher.

"If I can break out of a mundane job, and have my work sold in 65 countries, so can you.

"It’s incredible what you can do when you focus, put your mind to something you really want to do."

The new course has strictly limited places, which have to be booked in.
