Residents of Millfield Care Home enjoy their very own Olympic Games
As the world celebrates the 2024 Olympic Games, an Anchor care home is holding its own multi-sports event.
Residents of Millfield Care Home on Huddersfield Road in Waterhead have been battling it out in their own competitions as part of the Anchor Games.
Activities are tied to a theme each day - including ball games, track and field and water sports - ensuring there is something to suit each residents’ interests and abilities.
Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for people living in later life, launched The Anchor Games across all its locations in celebration of all things sport and to show support for the athletes competing in this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.
District manager Steve Vessey said: “Everyone is really enjoying getting involved in The Anchor Games.
"It’s a great opportunity to exercise our bodies and minds while being able to socialise and have fun!”
The team have put together an exciting line up of activities designed to encourage physical activity including walking, relay races and synchronised swimming exercises.
The week-long celebration of sport also includes opening and closing ceremony parties and reminiscence sessions where residents can unite in shared memories of sport.
Ethel Buckley, 102, a resident at Anchor’s Millfield care home, has been enjoying getting outside and being active as part of the initiative.
She said: “I really enjoy staying active and take part in most activities.
"I have especially enjoyed the armchair sports exercise as it helps me feel good and keeps me fit along with good company.”
