Local MP Debbie Abrahams is inviting Oldhamers to participate in her annual Memory Walk, held as part of the Dementia Friendly Oldham campaign, to show support for people affected by dementia and for the amazing work of the Alzheimer's Society.
The walk will take place in Alexandra Park, Oldham this Saturday (September 28) at 11am.
As a community, this is an opportunity to come together, show solidarity with those affected by dementia, and contribute to raising vital funds for the Alzheimer's Society.
The event is close to Ms Abrahams' heart, not only as the former co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on dementia, but also from her personal experience caring for her mother, who lived with Alzheimer's disease.
This year’s Memory Walk marks the sixth year that the amazing community has gathered to promote awareness about dementia as part of the Dementia Friendly Oldham campaign.
The walk aims to shine a light on the importance of staying connected, providing care and encouragement to those affected, and ensuring that they feel supported, both emotionally and physically.
By joining in on Saturday, you will help raise essential funds for the Alzheimer's Society to continue their work, supporting people living with dementia and investing in research for better treatments and a future without Alzheimer's.
Ms Abrahams said: "I’m thrilled that we are once again able to hold my Memory Walk as part of the Dementia Friendly Oldham campaign.
"This annual event is a meaningful opportunity for our community to come together in support of those affected by dementia.
"With nearly a million people in the UK currently living with dementia, and numbers expected to rise, raising awareness about the brain diseases that cause dementia is crucial.
"It ensures that people impacted by the condition receive the support, care, and understanding they deserve.
"In addition to raising awareness, we hope to raise much-needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, which plays a vital role in supporting families affected by dementia.
"This event is also a beautiful way for people to remember their loved ones and encourage those living with dementia to stay active and connected.
"It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together and advocate for a cause that touches so many lives."
The Alzheimer’s Society holds a special place in Ms Abrahams' heart.
Her mother, Angela, passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in September 2012.
Memory Walks are held across the UK every September and October to raise awareness of dementia and encourage those affected by the condition to remain active within their communities.
The walks also raise vital funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, which supports clinical research and provides assistance to those living with dementia.
