The Vicar, Rev Daniel Burton, thanked John for his exemplary service to the church community, and the Bishop blessed Mr Dunkerley and his companion Mrs Brenda Andrews
The congregation at Oldham Parish Church welcomed the Bishop of Middleton, Mark Davies, to conduct a Confirmation Service and to mark the retirement of the church's oldest volunteer.
In total, nine people were confirmed on the day, reflecting the increasing diversity of the congregation.
Oldham born and bred stood alongside Christians whose families originated in Syria, Nigeria and India.
It was a joyful act of commitment brought to life by the Bishop's inimitable style.
At the end of the service the church's long-standing Verger, Mr John Dunkerley, who is 88, was presented with a gift to mark his retirement.
Well known in the locality as a former Scout Leader, Mr Dunkerley has been Verger for over 30 years, working with five different Vicars during that time.
The current Vicar, Rev Daniel Burton, thanked John for his exemplary service to the church community, and the Bishop blessed Mr Dunkerley and his companion Mrs Brenda Andrews.
