A moorland fire and the emergency response closed Holmfirth Road near the Saddleworth border with West Yorkshire last night (Tuesday).
A police spokesperson said: "While it is difficult to estimate how long this will be for, based on previous incidents of a similar nature this road is likely to remain closed until the morning.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “At just after 9pm this evening (Tuesday 1 April), fire crews were called to reports of a moorland fire just off Holmfirth Road in Oldham.
“Three fire engines from Stalybridge, Mossley, Heywood, the Technical Rescue Unit from Ashton and a drone unit quickly attended the incident.
“Crews are working to extinguish the fire and remain in attendance.”
