Former Hathershaw student returns as Year Manager

Date published: 22 May 2025

Miss Leah O’Donnell, a former student of Hathershaw College, has returned to her roots - and is now serving as the dedicated Year 8 Manager.

A valued member of the pastoral team, she brings a unique perspective, drawing from both her experience as a past pupil and as a current parent at the school.

Reflecting on her time as a student, Miss O’Donnell recalls how much she enjoyed attending Hathershaw.

She thrived in the supportive environment, formed strong relationships with her teachers, and actively participated in clubs and competitions.

“The staff went above and beyond to make you feel special,” she said.

Inspired by her teachers, she pursued a career in childcare after successfully completing her GCSEs, going on to study at college.

Miss O’Donnell began her career as a Teaching Assistant in primary schools and discovered a passion for supporting children with challenging behaviour.

Over time, she developed a deep commitment to helping young people navigate their school journey.

Her experiences as a foster carer further enhanced her understanding of building relationships with teenagers and managing complex behavioural needs.

After several years away from Oldham, Miss O’Donnell returned in 2023 and soon joined Hathershaw College as Year 8 Manager.

“It’s nice to be back,” she said.

“There’s a sense of belonging here that drew me back to Hathershaw College.

"The building hasn’t changed much, and neither has the way the school supports its pupils and staff.”

Now working alongside some of her former teachers, Miss O’Donnell finds her role deeply rewarding.

She is passionate about building strong relationships with students and believes in understanding each child’s unique story.

“Hathershaw goes above and beyond for children and staff,” she added.

One of the things Miss O’Donnell values most about Hathershaw is its diversity.

She believes it plays a crucial role in teaching students to respect others and broadens their understanding of different cultures, values and beliefs.

Looking ahead, Miss O’Donnell hopes to continue making a positive impact on the lives of the students she supports and to grow further within the Hathershaw community.
