The Oasis Academy Oldham students have repeated their success
A team of ten students from a local secondary academy in Oldham have once again secured top honours in the prestigious Micro-Tyco environmental competition, winning for the second year in a row with their inspiring sustainability project.
Just 11 months after their first victory, Oasis Academy Oldham students have repeated their success by developing a bold new initiative aimed at transforming brownfield buildings into vertical urban farms.
Funded through charity community sports events, the project is designed to provide both environmental and social benefits, creating green spaces while offering opportunities for homeless individuals and repeat offenders to rebuild their lives through farm management and community engagement.
The team beat out fierce competition from across the north-west region and caught the attention of major global companies, including Siemens and Nestlé, who praised the project’s innovation and impact.
"This achievement is a reflection of the extraordinary passion, creativity, and social conscience of our students," said Mr Tariq Mahmood, Principal of the academy.
"Winning the Micro-Tyco competition for the second time in less than a year shows their ongoing commitment to environmental leadership and real-world change.
"We couldn’t be prouder."
Geography teacher Miss T Hamid, who led the students in this initiative, added: “It’s been truly inspiring to watch our young people take ownership of such a powerful idea and turn it into something tangible that benefits both the planet and our community.
"Their dedication, teamwork, and belief in making a difference are what made this project stand out, my heart is beaming with pride.”
