Oldham Mountain Rescue Team dog handler Rick Beswick and his faithful dog Ace have teamed up for a unique fundraiser for a heroic little boy.
Last year, Rick’s best mate's son, Finn, now aged five, was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Rick said: “It's been a horrific year for them all, and the only real way I can help is to raise a bit of money for their selected charity.
“I’m doing the coast to coast with Ace this week, over 100 miles on a 25 year old bike, no real training and with a broken dog.
"What could go wrong?
“And yes I’ve bought a trailer to drag Ace when he’s tired!”
Rick says Finn, from Mossley, has faced months in and out of the hospital, missing Christmas and his birthday, battling both the disease and the toll of treatment.
Rick added: "The journey has been incredibly challenging for his family, who have shown remarkable strength and resilience throughout this ordeal.
“Finn (pictured below) is doing brilliantly now, but there is still a long road ahead with his treatment scheduled to finish in January 2027 all being well.”
Rick begins his challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support on Wednesday (August 6).
Starting with a cycle into Manchester to warm up, Rick will then make a train journey up to Carlisle.
From Carlisle he will cycle west to the coast starting at Bowness on Solway.
“The following day I’ll be cycling East back through Carlisle following Hadrians wall, and onwards aiming to stop somewhere around Greenhead," said Rick.
"Day two I’ll continue along the wall route stopping around Riding Mill.
"Final day is a push through Newcastle to the pier at Tyne mouth.
“In total it’s 125 miles, if I don’t get lost or have to detour for a well deserved evening pint.
"I’ll be carrying all my kit and Ace's kit on the bike with us.
"The trailer will be used to give Ace the rest he needs.
“It’s a solo adventure for one man and his dog and a way for me to show support to a charity who have been there for those who really need them.”
He added: "MacMillan have been amazing for Finn and his family, they have also been there for my family when we’ve needed them so it’s an honour to raise money for them.
“I’m nearly 40, carrying a little more weight than I should be with a little less hair than I should have.
"I have a 25-year-old bike and haven’t done nearly enough training because life is life.
"That said I’m excited and determined to have fun.
"It’s an amazing cause and an amazing opportunity to tick off adventures with mans best friend.
"Ace is my constant companion and despite his broken limb can walk or run more than ten miles.”
