The In My Shoes Theatre Group is a disability-led theatre group for young artists with disabilities (from 18 years) in Oldham and surrounding areas.
The group’s aim is to raise awareness and develop equal opportunities for artists with disabilities and provide them with a platform and voice through the arts and performance opportunities to promote community cohesion and inclusivity.
They were founded in 2021 by Emily Skeldon, the Artistic Director who is a local experienced Creative Practitioner with a specialism in facilitating, directing and collaborating with artists with disabilities.
She said: "I decided to set up the group because I am extremely passionate about promoting equal opportunities for disabled artists in the arts.
"The group aims to promote inclusion, community cohesion and positive change in the local community.
“It was formed due to a lack of creative opportunities for artists with disabilities over the age of 18 to create a professional pathway for them to train and pursue a career in the arts industry after further education.
“Every day brings new, exciting opportunities,” she declared.
"I am incredibly proud of the group’s young artists for their creativity, courage, and unwavering belief in themselves.”
The group, who collaborate with local artists and organisations, are supported by Millgate Arts Centre, Stand and Be Counted Theatre, Saddleworth Round Table, North Ainley Solicitors, Action Together Oldham and councillor Sam Al-Hamdani.
The supportive network helps them to continue to grow and develop.
“It turns our dreams into reality and gives us a chance to create something meaningful and promote inclusivity and diversity in the arts and our community," added Emily.
"The latest original production, ‘A Salute to Shakespeare’, was performed at Millgate Arts Centre in March and adapted for an outdoor theatre experience in Uppermill Park on a Saturday last month."
In My Shoes welcomes new members to join their young company, RISE, who meet on a Tuesday (7pm-8:30pm) at Springhead Congregational Church.
