Northern Youth event promises plenty

Date published: 13 September 2025

Young people across Oldham and Greater Manchester are invited to a free outdoor event – Northern Youth at Northern Roots – which is taking place this Sunday (21st) from 1pm to 3pm.

The event is designed for young people, by young people, and promises a fun afternoon of music, creativity, wellbeing and nature connection.

Held at Northern Roots, just a short walk from Oldham town centre and next to popular Alexandra Park, this end-of-summer event celebrates youth talent, community, and social inclusion through a relaxed and welcoming environment.

What to expect:

Sustainable Arts and Crafts: Take part in hands-on workshops where you can create your own eco-friendly personalised items

Wellness Sessions: Drop into calming sessions designed to support mental wellbeing and mindfulness

Nature and Sustainability: Explore Northern Roots’ Urban Farm, a bustling growing space that showcase regenerative farming

Plus, enjoy live music, warm drinks and treats in a laid-back outdoor setting.

All activities are free and everyone is welcome.

Northern Youth is aimed at young people aged 16 – 25 years old.

Northern Youth has been designed and produced by Northern Roots’ Young Creatives, Chloe, Tamikka and Hassan, three local young people who have been working closely with their peers to create an event that reflects what young people in Oldham, and wider Manchester, really want.

‘’Our Northern Youth event is centred around young people. What I want is a day of good vibes, and for young people to feel as though they have somewhere they belong - simple as that! It will cover arts, craft, performance, nature, and wellness - making sure there is something for everyone,’’ Chloe, a Northern Roots Young Creative, said.

The Northern Roots Young Creatives programme is a paid nine-week programme.

The programme has been designed to enable young people to experience a structured working environment in which their ideas are central and to develop their skillset and confidence.

The Young Creatives programme has enabled the Northern Roots charity to understand what young people (16-24) would like to see, do, create and learn at Northern Roots, and to gain insight into the issues that matter most to them.

The Northern Youth event is part of Northern Roots’ wider mission to welcome young people to the site and engage them through arts, culture, wellbeing and nature connection.

This event, and the Young Creatives roles, are funded by Arts Council England.

Northern Roots is creating the UK’s largest urban farm and eco-park on 160 acres of green space in Oldham.

In 2026, the charity will open as a unique community hub and key visitor destination, with a brand new £12.9m Visitor Centre, Forestry Skills Centre and a further 4 acres of urban farm.
