Oldham council has officially confirmed its bin collection schedule for the 2025 Christmas and New Year period.

There are a number of changes over the festive season.

With all the bank holidays falling on weekdays this year, there’s likely to be disruption to the usual timetable.

Oldham Council has warned that any collection dates that would usually fall on the Thursday and Friday of Christmas Day and Boxing Day, or the Thursday of January 1st is likely to be pushed forwards or backwards.

A spokesperson has also warned: “We know the festive period can be a busy time and with all the extra packaging and food waste, it’s more important than ever to stay on top of your bin collections.

"Please remember to check your collection dates carefully so you don’t miss a pick-up.”

The waste management crew will also be picking up extra recycling during this period, as long as it is neatly presented and clearly labelled as recycling.

The council are also encouraging Oldham residents to give bin crew ‘a wave or thank you’ as they ‘work hard through the holidays to keep things running smoothly’.

Here’s everything you need to know about bin collections over the festive period:

Disposing of real Christmas trees

The council has also given extra tips on how to dispose of Christmas trees once the decorations have come down after Christmas.

For those with green bins, it’s possible to simply chop up the tree and dispose it in the green bin.

That’s as long as the largest part of the trunk from the base of the tree has been removed, as this can’t be composted, and all lights and decorations have been removed.

Alternatively, residents can take it to Arkwright Street Household Waste and Recycling Centre, along with any extra Christmas waste, or leave it at a collection points in the following parks (from December 28 to January 7):

Higher Memorial Park (car park), Joseph Street, Failsworth (open 7.30am until dusk).
Royton Park (car park) off Bleasdale Street, Royton. (open 7.30am until dusk).
Werneth Park (car park) off Frederick Street, Werneth (open 7.30am until dusk).
