The anti clockwise carriageway was shut between Junction 24 at Denton Island and Junction 23 at Ashton under Lyne after the incident was reported shortly after 6pm.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that the closure led to queueing traffic along the stretch, with congestion building quickly during the early evening.
Eyewitnesses reported emergency services at the scene, although details of those involved and any injuries have not been confirmed.
National Highways traffic cameras showed long lines of stationary vehicles as drivers were held or diverted away from the affected section.
A separate incident was also reported elsewhere on the M60, with all traffic temporarily held on the anti clockwise carriageway between Junction 7 at Stretford and Junction 5 at Princess Parkway due to another crash.
Further disruption was recorded on the A56 Chester Road southbound in Old Trafford, where an accident led to delays between the A5067 and Warwick Road.
Motorists have been advised to expect continued delays while incidents are dealt with and routes are cleared.
