Romance enough to make us girls weep

Romance isn’t dead.
Or is it? No, not in our house. At least I don’t think it is.
All right, maybe it’s on its way out. Let’s say it’s on its last legs.
Put it like this, don’t give it a long book. I’ll tell you why.
I was watching a film last night and he was commenting on it.
It was a romance and a beautiful one at that. I was moved and touched and I cried.
Yes I’ll hold my hand up and say I cried. A lot. He scoffed.
Yes he actually snorted derisively up through his nose.
I ignored him of course and continued to sniffle and blubber my way through the film.
“For Pete’s sake why do you watch this rubbish when it makes you cry,” he moans from behind a car magazine at the other end of the sofa.
I answer “because in my mind we are like that couple, madly in love, brought together at last, wondering how we survived without each other for so long.”
He spat his wine across the room — and that, my friends, is the difference between men and women.
We love to cry.
Anything that makes our eyes run like an open tap is good in our…eyes.
Men however hate it.
They hate crying with a vengeance.
The only time they cry is when their team is relegated or when their car breaks down.
They would no sooner cry at a book or a film than we would kick a tyre and suck air in through our teeth.
But we can forgive all that.
We can let it go if we have a little romance in our lives.
So, bless him, last year for Christmas I got three presents.
You may remember me mentioning I have a nut allergy. The first present I received was a box of Ferrero Rocher.
You can see where this is going. The second was a torch and the third one was a torch.
At that point and I think I should be honest with you I was thinking, “hey it’s Christmas Day, the roads are clear I could pack my bags and be away in minutes.”
However this evening he walked through the door with a bunch of flowers.
They were from the garage like, but at least momance momentarily awoke from its coma.
