Comic Coogan’s a laugh a minute

Steve Coogan, Manchester Apollo

DESPITE less than favourable reviews of his 40 date UK tour I was more than confident that Middleton comic Steve Coogan would put on a fantastic show — and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

From the moment he burst on stage as loose moralled Pauline Calf in a saucy dress showcasing an impressive pair of legs it was clear Coogan was comfortable on home turf.
A brassy number about the Marriott hotel and Pauline’s chequered love life kicked off the “Alan Partridge and Other Less Successful Characters” tour in style and snippets from Pauline’s new book – the title of which can’t be repeated in a family newspaper — had the 4,000 strong audience in fits of laughter.

He may be based in LA these days but Manchester will always hold him close to their hearts — a fact proved by six soldout stints at the Apollo and a date at the Arena later this month.

When Pauline had finished strutting her stuff cringeworthy roadie Tommy Saxondale paid a visit to tell us why drugs are bad along with another wit filled song about his first love Lizzie Q.

Next up was beer swilling, student-hating scrounger Paul Calf complete with pastel suit and a mullett.

The actors who fill the gaps during costume changes also deserve a mention — especially the brilliant sketch depicting a love affair between God and the devil.

After the interval we got what we had all been waiting for — an appearance from Mr Alan Partridge who had updated his image by swapping his trademark green blazer for a snazzy bomber jacket.

For me, the crowning moment of the show was the finale where Coogan – who’s had his fair share of bad press – sang about his bad behaviour with tales of drug abuse “largely fabricated” and strippers “some exaggerated”.

A fantastic night!
