THE Magic Numbers burst on to the scene in 2005 and gained fans with jolly ditties such as “Forever Lost” and “When I See You, I See Me”.
But two albums later — “The Magic Numbers” and “Those The Brokes” —the band, made up of two sets of siblings, Romeo and Michele Stodart and Angela and Sean Gannon, disappeared as quickly as they’d popped up.
The Stodarts are the children of a Scottish father and a Portuguese mother and were born in Trinidad. The children were raised in New York after the family fled a coup attempt in 1990, before moving to London a few years later.
The Gannons are of Irish descent but lived in London where they became friends with their new neighbours.
They formed The Magic Numbers in 2002 and the foursome began touring small local venues attracting famous followers such as The Chemical Brothers, Travis and Ed Harcourt.
Their first single, “Hymn for Her”, was followed by a sell out gig in London and a live performance on Radio Two.
Their debut album was shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2005.
A support slot for The Who and a performance at Glastonbury seemed to seal the band’s star status ,but then they dropped off the radar.
The waiting and wondering is now over as the quirky quartet are back with new album “You Hurt So Good” and an intimate club tour.
One of their new tracks — “All I Believe In” — features on the soundtrack of vampire film “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”. which is guaranteed to broadcast them to a new audience.
Catch them perform at Manchester’s Band on the Wall on Sunday.
