Here’s my resolution: not make resolutions

WHAT KATI DID NEXT: Well, now that Christmas is finally done and dusted we can all stand back, look at the steaming pile of rubble left behind and turn on our heels to the beckoning call of the New Year.

Ah yes, we are now in the throes of all that is new. New Year resolutions. New start. New Beginning.

As I pointed out this time last year however, these new things never really last that long so this year I am not going to think of the New Year as new at all, no I am going to think of 2010 as just a simple, casual continuation of all that was, in 2009.

The good and the bad bits I’m afraid.

You can’t just take the good and leave out the bad, no, it must all be packed into your knapsack, thrown over your shoulder and taken with you on into your New Year journey.

So where are we going with this knapsack of joy and pain?

Well this year I’m moving into my 38th year of life, as I say, bad with the good.

My husband will be celebrating his big 50 this year, again a gulp but on I go.

We have realised we probably won’t be going on a summer holiday this year and most definitely will not be able to move house like we would have wanted to.

The new car is definitely out, so it’s straight to work on that exhaust with some masking tape and an old tin can and worst of all those shiny pair of boots I have been coveting for months, waiting for the sales to begin, will not at any point be safely housed in the warmth of my wardrobe.

Right then, I see the crippingly bad of growing old and not being able to afford any luxuries but there is a distinct lack of good in this New Year. Back to the drawing board.

Let us shoehorn the bad into a box, nail and glue it down and oh what the heck, let’s launch it into the canal and now let’s look at all the shiny new good stuff we’re left with...

Happiness, health, family, and the promise of warmer weather. Marvellous. Happy Good Year everyone.
