In praise of Stella — and the low heel

WHAT KATI DID NEXT: THANK goodness for Stella McCartney.
I know what you’re all thinking. What? But bear with me, this woman will be changing our summer for the better and I’ll tell you why.
Last year, because that’s the way it works in fashion circles, lovely Stella, daughter of slightly deluded Paul, showed a collection for S/S10.
In our language that means she put some very thin models on a runway, in front of posh people from all over the globe, in some clothes that she designed and got someone else to patch together on a sewing machine and called it a “collection” for the period of our lives known as spring and summer of 2010.
Now my husband at this point would leave the room scoffing and snorting, mentioning wastes of times or monies or even lives.
He is a scientist at heart and all that worries him is the universe and small matters such as that.
I, on the other hand, am drooling over the thought of the clothes, shoes and bags I will never be able to afford, even though I do now have a direct debit set up with the National Lottery. Fingers crossed everyone.
This is because I am a vacuous fashion clone and I love my clothes. However, in all fairness, I know not of many women who given the time and the money are not. I mean, how else did Gok Wan get a career on the telly?
The reason why the lovely Stella, daughter of vegetarian Linda, will be saving our bacon this S/S10 is because she introduced something almost unheard of on to the catwalks. The low heel.
I know it sounds humble and almost pointless to you menfolk but the low heel will be not only the saviours of our lives but also yours.
We will now, and I utterly guarantee this, be able to keep up with you as you walk from one end of town to the other.
We will no longer be trailing behind or even at times screaming at you to slow down as we painfully, in more ways than one, stagger behind you liked shoed ponies.
This is a huge moment in fashion. But it won’t last for long. In fact the shoes on the A/W10 catwalk are precariously high, so enjoy this summer folks, it’ll be over before you know it.
