TV or not TV, that is the question

WHAT KATI DID NEXT:

WE think we might get rid of our telly.
I know, it seems utterly irresponsible, not only to our child who I’m sure will not survive without his daily dose of Thomas the Tank Engine, but also to ourselves, who love our documentaries and dramas. Bbut you see, that’s just it.

We love our documentaries and dramas and he loves his Thomas but out of the full 35 channels we have, for free, and the 24/7 TV culture we have acquired from the good ole US of A, we have clocked up in the last four months, two series of documentaries, one series of Thomas and two dramas.

One of which was rubbish.

It’s not that I don’t want to pay my licence fee, I would pay my licence fee for Radio 4 alone, where I always get a daily dose of documentary and drama.

It’s because I want to turn off the machine that hums constantly in the corner of our room, preventing us from doing anything more meaningful. When we go away on holiday we spend the whole time, talking, reading, eating long langorous meals, enjoying each others company and constantly telling one another how marvellous it is not to be beholden to the Logie Baird whirring away.

We congratulate ourselves for managing a full week without the need for “Pimp My Ride,” or “Country House Rescue” — both of which revolve around people I care very little for. Last time we arrived back from a break away we absolutely, totally and utterly considered it for a bit.

So obviously it’s still in our living room, droning away.

Everytime we sit down at the end of a long day, baby in bed, wine in hand, we have a serious discussion about laying an end to the life of this creature, putting it down, throwing it out, drowning it in a canal and every night we spend the next 60 minutes chasing our tails with the remote, trying desperately to find something, anything that may be of any interest to either of us.

So that’s it, I’m sick of it, I’m calling a man with a van to take the blinkin thing away.

Or shall we just stick it in the spare room just in case?
