Sun sets on the summer sausages

WHAT KATI DID NEXT: We’ve just had the last BBQ of the year.

I can tell you this with impunity because there were a few things dissapearing which are pretty essential to any BBQ. Sunshine and light.

It seems so obvious when you say it out loud but both eluded us yesterday.

The sunshine we had been promised never materisalised, in its place was left a very blowy wind and the light faded fast leaving us, well plain in the dark really.

I know it was the last BBQ because as people left, with torches, they were saying things like “Great way to end the summer that,” and “Well winter’s on its way.” So winter is on its way, again it seems horribly doomsday to say but let’s be honest, we really don’t have much of an autumn in this country. Ok so the leaves turn brown and for one day we may have a blue sky, which lights up the burnt oranges beautifully but mainly it just sort of drizzles.

A long sad drizzle all the way through to December. It is sad to see summer go, and I have sympathy with the people who truly suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder but there is something truly sad about winter being just around the corner and that is pubs and restaurants having their Christmas bookings posters up resplendent with festive cheer and pictures of Christmas trees.

Please call me bah humbug if you wish but that should be illegal. We all know Christmas is coming, we all know we need to book that office do, so we don’t need signs at the end of August reminding us of the fact.

We’ve got a lot of drizzle to get through before Christmas comes. In fact like I said we have just had our last BBQ of the year and in defiance of these posters and the onslaught of all things merry and bright, I’m going to have another BBQ.

In the dark and the cold. We can wrap up, we can bring umbrellas, we can buy candles. We can do this. So it wasn’t the end of summer, it wasn’t the beginning of winter. No it was just another BBQ with friends. However I fear we may be dining alone this time.
