Music From the Great Disaster Movies, Halle Orchestra, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
NOT the kind of title that might point to a jolly night out, it may seem, but the range of music chosen by conductor Stephen Bell for the latest in the Halle’s pops series brought back vivid memories of some of the biggest blockbuster films of the past four decades.
The music evoked memories of everything from the Vietnam war to alien invasions, sinking ships, earthquakes, raging fires and space disasters.
As could only be expected, the music of John Williams featured heavily throughout. The 79-year-old has 45 Oscar nominations for his film music, a record beaten only by Walt Disney.
This was a stunning concert, and such a polished and seemingly effortless performance from a full symphony orchestra.
There is still time to catch a pops concert, with three more scheduled before the end of the season in April.
