Ugly animals and art for health as Manchester Science Festival comes to Oldham

Date published: 13 September 2018

Three Manchester Science Festival events will take place in Oldham this year.

The Ugly Animal Roadshow, at Gallery Oldham, Art Junkies, at Ebor Studio, and Facing Out: Healing Through Art, at Maggie’s Oldham, will bring the festival’s family-friendly take on science this October half term.

In the Ugly Animal Roadshow (Saturday, October 27), Gallery Oldham will welcome the most monstrous, hideous, odious, fabulous creatures, letting visitors explore the incredible biology of the world’s ugliest animals.

At Art Junkies, artist and recycling junkie Maryanne Royle and Dr Karl Williams, the Director for the Centre for Waste Management, will sift through the scrapheap, showing you how science can turn everyday rubbish into art.

And for Facing Out: Healing Through Art, artist Lucy Burscough invites anyone directly or indirectly affected by facial cancer to take part in a therapeutic creative arts workshop.

These are just some of the Manchester Science Festival events to be announced.

The full programme is available online at: www.manchestersciencefestival.com.

Other highlights include science busking at libraries around Greater Manchester, an electric science showdown, the Waters wacky science lab and GameLab at the University of Salford.

Manchester Science Festival director Antonio Benitez said: "I’m delighted to be able to unveil this year’s Manchester Science Festival programme which features an incredible range of events – I’m confident that there really is something for everyone from those looking to find out about the very latest science to families simply hoping for a great day out, and everyone in between.

"At Manchester Science Festival we aim to be most bold, ambitious and creative science festival in the UK and this year’s programme really embodies that broad and exciting vision.

"I’m also proud that this is our most inclusive and accessible programme yet, putting science and innovation at the heart of culture in the UK."

The festival is produced annually by the Science and Industry Museum, and is now in its 12th year.
