Keeping fit and raising much-needed funds for Syria

Date published: 13 November 2018

Fifty runners took part in Human Aid’s first Oldham community run.

The runners completed a 3k run around Glodwick, all with the aim of raising awareness and donations for those internally displaced inside Syria.

The run saw nine mosques and institutes from across Oldham came together in unison for the run - the first of its kind in Oldham.

Human Aid UK hope to organise this run annually and unite the community of Oldham together for charitable causes across the globe.

Jewel Choudhury, a volunteer of Human Aid, said: "Not only did we manage to get the community together for a run on a cold November Saturday, we also raised £3,500.

"The run consisted of participants from across Oldham which was beautiful to see.

"We didn’t only enjoy the run and have a great time, but we also raised awareness for the ongoing crisis inside Syria and supported the noble work of Human Aid."

The donations raised will be used to provide shelters and food packs for those in refugee camps inside the city of Idlib in Syria.

There are currently over three million civilians (a third of which are children) in the area in Idlib.

Councillor Mohon Ali added: "It was an honour to present awards to participants at the Oldham community run.

"It was very inspiring to see the community come together and raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in such a unique and creative way.

"Even as we speak right now there are thousands of Syrians suffering.

"I believe it’s the responsibility of all of us to do our bit to help the poor and destitute wherever they may be."

The run was sponsored by Amin Haque Solicitors, who are based in Oldham.
