'Beating the Bounds' walk set for September 26

Date published: 25 August 2021

Shaw and Crompton Parish Council have organised the latest ‘Beating the Bounds’ walk, and it will take place on Sunday, September 26, commencing at 9:30am from Dunwood Park.

The free guided walk takes the form of a circular route of about 13 miles, taking in sites including Jubilee, Pingot Quarry, Crompton Moor, Brushes Clough, Fullwood, and Ellenroad.

Walkers can expect to see stunning views over the Pennines and Oldham and beyond.

If required, a break will be taken at the Kings Arms at Grains Bar; other rest breaks will be available at St Joseph’s Church in Shaw and The Puckersley Inn.

For those who want an easier walk why not join up at the King’s Arms (at approximately 12 noon), St. Joseph’s Church (at approximately 1.30pm) or The Puckersley Inn (at approximately 2.30 pm) where you will then continue along the rest of the journey.

Walkers will need to be physically fit to take part in this intermediate-to-hard walk.

Please take a packed lunch and drinks sufficient for the walk, together with water proofs and suitable footwear.

Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom dating back to Anglo Saxon times.

During the ritual, a group of prominent elders would walk the geographical boundary of their locality, to impress a memory on future generations.
