Talented pianist Sonny Thomas
A talented Year 12 student from Hulme Grammar School has achieved a remarkable musical milestone, earning a Distinction in his ABRSM Grade 8 Piano examination — one of the highest and most prestigious accolades in school-level music.
Sonny Thomas, aged 16, accomplished this rare feat with a full year of sixth form still ahead of him — an exceptional achievement that underscores his commitment, discipline, and extraordinary musical ability.
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is globally recognised as a benchmark for music education, and Grade 8 represents the highest level before diploma qualifications typically pursued at university or conservatoire level.
Achieving a Distinction at this stage is an honour attained by very few school-age musicians.
“This is an extraordinary achievement,” said Mr Duncan, Head of Music at Hulme Grammar School.
“Very few pupils attain Grade 8 during their time at secondary school, and even fewer with a distinction.
"It’s a testament to Sonny’s exceptional musical talent and his dedication to his development as a pianist.
"He should be incredibly proud of himself — we certainly are.”
Balancing the rigorous demands of A-Level study alongside intensive piano practice, Sonny has displayed not only technical mastery but also the resilience and passion that lie at the heart of Hulme Grammar School’s ethos.
Hulme Grammar, which recently celebrated over 400 years of educational excellence, prides itself on nurturing the whole pupil — encouraging personal growth and creativity alongside academic achievement.
Music is a vibrant part of school life, with opportunities ranging from choirs and ensembles to individual tuition and public performances.
“Sonny’s success reflects the aspiration and perseverance we seek to instil in all our students,” said a school spokesperson.
“We hope his story will inspire other young musicians across the borough to pursue their passions with the same level of dedication and belief.”
The school community warmly congratulates Sonny on this outstanding accomplishment — a shining example of the talent and potential nurtured every day at Hulme Grammar School.
