Today’s Pride in Oldham nominee
PROVIDING individual care for someone at the most vulnerable time of their life is never easy, but staff at a local resource centre are doing such a stellar job that they have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.
The Limecroft Resource in Limeside has been open for 11 years and provides short-term stay and daycare facilities for dementia sufferers.
Manager Nicola Kershaw said: “We’re really surprised to have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.
“The staff here work incredibly well together and because we only deal with dementia, we have built up a really high level of expertise on how to deal with it.
“Our main emphasis is on treating people as individuals and we often map out family histories and backgrounds, so we can learn what kind of experiences a person has had in their life and then we can better understand them.”
The caring team at Limecroft deals with a range of dementia sufferers, from those in the early stages, who just need support to keep themselves safe, while staying independent, to more serious cases.
But they make sure everyone is offered a selection of activities.
Mrs Kershaw added: “People here can enjoy exercise classes and reminiscing groups and we often take them out.
“We are trying to forge links with community groups, so that residents can join various local groups, according to their interests.
“For many, just being able to have a rest and be looked after helps them and for others — it’s a break from isolation.
“We all enjoy the work so much, because we are dealing with all sorts of different people.
“From the first day they come in, you see what you can achieve for them and it’s lovely to make a difference.”
Olive O’Callaghan, whose mother is looked after by the team at the Limecroft centre, nominated staff for the award.
He said: “Managers and care assistants at Limecroft give more than 100 per cent to the care, attention and well-being of residents.
“The centre has a very welcoming, helpful and caring attitude towards residents and relatives.”
