Doctor regards her patients as friends

Date published: 30 July 2008

DR JANE Rothwell has carved out a niche for herself as a GP in Chadderton, a position she has held for two decades.

She regards her patients as friends, and it is one of those patients, Daniel Francis, who nominated her for a Pride in Oldham award because she is “understanding, non-judgmental, a fantastic doctor and always has time.”

Dr Rothwell is based at CH Medical in Fields New Road Health Centre.

Originally from Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, she did her medical training in Liverpool, and her job with the practice was her first full-time post.

She recalled: “I decided this was the place I wanted to stay.

“I love the job, I love general practice and the continuity of care that goes with it.

“I am fascinated by people, and I find it a privilege to have worked in my little community at this practice for 20 years.”

She added: “When people pop in that I haven’t seen for a while I realise they regard me as their friend, and that is a real privilege.

“They invite me into their lives and that makes the job very special.”

A keen horsewoman, Dr Rothwell (49), said of her work: “We all work very hard to have a team approach, it’s not just me.

“Every member of staff is valuable, and if I have been nominated for an award, it is only because I am part of a very good team which puts in a lot of hard work.”
