A TEAM of hairdressers proved a real lifeline for one woman diagnosed with breast cancer.
Karen Birley (39), from Royton, was left terrified of losing her hair after being diagnosed in June, 2007.
But her local hairdressers at Inspire Salon, Rochdale Road, Royton, came to her rescue.
Not only did they boost her morale and give her lots of encouragement, they also held a surprise fund-raiser and raised £300 for a breast cancer charity.
Mrs Birley was so grateful for their help and support, she has nominated them for a Pride in Oldham award.
She said: “My hair is my pride and joy and I was terrified of losing it.
“It was long and thick and dark and I used to go to the hairdressers every week.
“They helped me cut it short and then shave it off and gave me so much praise, pampering and encouragement that I chose not to wear a wig.
“They also organised a special surprise charity event where everyone dressed in pink to raise money for a breast cancer charity.
“They even did my hair, which has grown back curly, for my wedding day in May and I’ve had so many compliments. I’ve been blown away by their support.”
Owner Leanne Braithwaite (28), from Rose Bay Close, Royton, said: “It is lovely to be nominated for an award — we are all shocked but it is a really nice thing to do.
“I’ve known Karen for a long time and I don’t think we did anything special, its just part of our work.
“The fund-raiser was held because we wanted to do something special.
“The diagnosis shocked us all but Karen is really strong these days and outgoing.”
