Carer transformed my life

A CARER with a heart of gold has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Gary Rowbottom (48), from Summercroft, Chadderton, is registered blind and has learning difficulties. But the help and support from his independent carer Lynn Smallwood over the past four years has transformed his life.

Mr Rowbottom nominated Lynn as a thank-you for all her hard work.

He said: “Lynn goes above and beyond the call of duty — she is always there to talk to you and is a very kind person.

“She takes me out and about, on day trips and to the park.

“I just wouldn’t get out without her. I’d be isolated and alone in the flat without her.”

Lynn (46), from Henley Street, Chadderton, has worked as a carer all her life and also volunteers at the Link Centre in Union Street.

She said: “I’m speechless — I’ve never been nominated before. I feel a bit embarrassed. I’ve been a carer most of my working life, caring for my uncle before moving to other families and now Gary.

“When I first met him, I noticed he had undiagnosed diabetes so I took him to the doctor.

“Caring is something that has always been in me. It’s all about looking after each other.”
