Dedicated Dave puts young first

ON the ball . . . Dave Coleman gets a rousing cheer from members of Chadderton Juniors

FOOTBALL coaching, rugby training, scouts, amateur dramatics, a youth group . . . Dave Coleman devotes endless hours each week to young people.

And his dedication has earned the 41-year-old of Medway Close, Hollinwood, a Pride in Oldham nomination.

However, Dave, a gardener with Oldham Council, admitted he was embarrassed at the recognition and said modestly: “I do not think I am doing anything outstanding.”

The father-of-two runs two under 11 teams at Chadderton Juniors and coaches rugby at Greenacres School where his youngest son, Samuel (10), is a pupil.

He is leader of 21st St Barnabas scouts in Clarksfield, runs a youth group at the church, has set up a youth drama group in Denshaw, and is also an amateur dramatics member himself.

Dave credited his understanding wife, Deborah, and everyone else who is involved, adding: “I just seem to have the time — it does not feel like it sometimes.

“And I enjoy seeing youngsters happy. That’s what it boils down to.

“It is something for them to do. Everybody criticises young people at the moment but if you channel their energies into certain things, the good will come out of it.

“It is not only me that does all this. I do not think I deserve to be nominated.”

Dave was nominated by Jill Taylor whose 10-year-old son Dillan plays for Chadderton Juniors.

She said: “The time he puts in is unbelievable. The lads think he is the best and so do the parents.

“He just amazes me how he fits everything in and he works full-time as well.

“People like him who work with youngsters and do it all in their own free time deserve to be recognised. And he is so modest as well.”
