A scouting family does its best for children

A FAMILY with a long-standing love of scouting has been nominated for a Pride In Oldham award.

Alison (66) and Sydney (68) Kayley, along with son Neil (44) and daughter-in-law Tracey (38), have seen thousands of Hollinwood children enjoy both the cubs and beavers groups.

Mr and Mrs Kayley, joined the cubs as assistants in 1960, working for 27 years before taking a break. But it wasn’t long before the couple were lending a helping hand in setting up a new beaver colony at St Margaret and St Chad’s Church in 2002.

Mrs Kayley, of Davis Lane, Springhead, is now the club leader, while Neil is involved in the district organisation.

Mrs Kayley said: “The best thing about it is the enjoyment and buzz the children get from taking part. It also helps them stay on the right track. To be nominated for a Pride award is flabbergasting.”

Sandra Jones (62), from Farrand Road, nominated the foursome.

She said: “Alison and Sydney ran St Margaret’s Hollinwood cubs for a long time. They then came out of retirement to start a beaver group without which a lot of children would not have the benefit of the scouting movement. Their son Neil has been with the scouts since he was a child and he has won an award for his work. The children get so much out of the beaver group and both Alison and Sydney give up so much of their spare time.”
