Honour hits home for selfless Alan

AN unstinting volunteer who gives up hours of his time to help make Chadderton safer has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award.

Alan Wilde has been chairman of Chadderton Home Watch since a neighbour volunteered him for the post at a meeting to set up the crime prevention initiative in 1982.

The 65-year-old regularly attends events to highlight its benefits and encourage residents to set up schemes.

A co-opted member of Chadderton Area Committee, he also became Oldham police’s first community volunteer in 2006.

This involves undertaking administrative tasks to lighten the load of the Chadderton Neighbourhood Policing Team — officially for four hours a week, although in reality, he sets no limit on the time. The former Oldham Chronicle worker said modestly: “I am honoured, humbled and proud.”

Alan, of Broadway, Chadderton, has the support of an understanding wife, Barbara, and great respect for Chadderton’s policing team.

Home Watch has had many success stories over the years, the most recent when a member spotted a man knocking on doors in Chadderton. Within 30 minutes he was arrested with a stolen plasma TV and a jar containing £500 in coins in his possession.

“If we could have 100 per cent Home Watch across Oldham that would be super,” added Alan.
