THOMAS Stubbs is proving a knockout in boxing after becoming the first Oldhamer for 21 years to win a senior ABA title.

And the distinction has earned him a nomination for this year’s Pride in Oldham awards.

The 18-year-old only entered the competition to gain valuable experience, and did not expect to triumph in the 48kg class.

Thomas came through several bouts before claiming a place in the final at the famous York Hall, Bethnal Green, where he defeated Hertfordshire’s Ben Fowl by a wide points margin.

The former North Chadderton School pupil, who boxes for Northside ABC and Hopwood Hall, where he is currently studying joinery, has set his sights on winning a place in the Great Britain team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Thomas, who also fought for England for the first time against Hungary in June, is also eyeing the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in two years’ time.

And he recently visited India to box in the Commonwealth Youth Games which were held in Pune.

Thomas, who lives in Chadderton, has also been short-listed for the forthcoming European Championships.

The youngster’s achievements are even more creditable because he receives no funding and is desperately seeking sponsorship to ease the financial strain.

If you would like to sponsor Thomas, contact his family on 07795-965421.
